Introduction

Welcome to the new version of “Cyanomys’ Guide to Playing RPGs Online” which is a new version of “Comparison of Alternatives to Roll20”!  As of April 12, 2023 I have renamed the document and completely revamped it for hopefully more readability with modular pages that can be inserted into larger guides/tables.

The previous guide can be found here:

A copy of the previous guide has been preserved here if Dropbox goes offline for any reason:

Historical document

Please share the Guide with as many people as you can.  I did all this work because I know people need the resources right now and I want to help as many people as I can to continue to play games together during this dark time. Share URL: https://tinyurl.com/VTTGuide

If you want to rewrite an area completely, feel free! I don’t play with every VTT and if you have a more personal experience I’ll probably add the vast majority of it.

  1. Discord — You probably already know discord. It’s arisen out of the new age of chromium based apps to provide the central place for practically every DND game. If you haven’t seen it yet, Discord provides an easy to use and popular text channel, voice chat, video chat, and basic forums system.
  2. Guilded - Has a very similar feature set to Discord and Slack combined, with a built in calendar!
  3. Other Voice and Video Apps - There are many to choose from and one of these might fit your needs. </aside>
