Intro
- TaleSpire is a 3D application used to build beautiful, tile-based worlds for TTRPG's. The application is rule-agnostic, so you can use it with any TTRPG that uses square tiles. An easy, drag-and-drop interfaces allows you to build anything, from small rooms for battles to large cities that your players can explore. It comes with quite a lot of minifigs you can use for players and enemies, but also has a built-in import feature for HeroForge minis!
The game is currently in Alpha, so the devs at BouncyRock are constantly adding new features, tile sets, and minifigures. There is a large mod community, which the devs embrace, including a built-in mod community feature coming soon. You can also share maps and assets with the community through sites like TalesTavern and TalesBazaar.
Cost
π° Currently there is only an up-front cost for the system, and each player will need to buy it.
There will presumably be further costs later for add-on packs or game system support but that isnβt announced.
Features
- Battlemaps
- π Shared battlemaps with player- and GM-controlled tokens is Talespireβs bread and butter. Its designed to look like an IRL game with IRL game pieces as much as a 3d computer system can
- π Many many reviewers harp on how easy it is to design maps even for people who are technologically inept ;)
- β Basic drawing capabilities arenβt there, but they also arenβt exactly necessary in a 3d environment
- β
Map-making tools
- β
Ruler works in 3d. Which seems small, but it looks great when youβre using it and makes fights in the 3rd dimension so much more special, like on a cliff face or city roofs.
- π Very basic fog of war
- β
Dynamic Lighting with sun direction on a slider, post processing for frozen landscapes etc.
- Chat & Dice
- β
Basic chat with roll commands & macros
- β Die rolls from character sheets
- π Visual (non-chat) dice rolling interface that bounce off the environment and your minis, like rolling dice on a table!
- Character Sheets
- β Character sheets for various games
- β Moving character sheets between games
- β Custom character sheet creation
- Compendium
- β Game SRDs available
- β Game rules available for purchase or upload
- β Drag-n-drop to character sheets
- Handouts, Etc
- β Types of handouts able to be edited and displayed
- β Playing cards, random tables
- β Calendars and note taking
- β Storage
- Automation
- β
Turn Tracker
- β Click-to-roll sheets
- π Targeting, damaging, healing, and other effects with limited animations
- β Macro buttons

Community modules exist already even in Alpha, and will be getting better soon with a built-in tool for modules on the roadmap
- Music & Video Streaming
- β Integrated voice & video calls
- π Stream music to players with the built in player. no support for external music yet though.
- Extras
- β Mobile device support - unless steamdeck counts as a mobile device now
- π Devs are SUPER interactive and responsive. Very active in the official Discord!
- β
Community - want a map from a Final Fantasy game or other games? theyβve got you covered lol. The community is strong because the platform is easy for everyone.

Pros & Cons
| Pros |
Cons |
| - Rules-agnostic |
|
- Pretty graphics
- HeroForge integration
- Large mod community
- Most props can be freely rotated and clipped into each other, allowing the building of custom props
- Has both Fantasy and Sci-Fi assets
- Devs are working on an API to integrate mods and web forms (such as character sheets)
- Cinematic and screenshot modes
- You can even use screenshot mode to get a top-down image of your build to use as a 2D map
- Large community that shares maps, assets, and mods
- In-game/in-world dice rolling with map interaction (ex: bouncing a D20 off a wall)
- Built-in music and ambient sounds for an immersive session
- Steam game, so hooking up with friends is easy
- This application is basically digital Dwarven Forge! | - For full interactivity, all players should buy a copy
- It requires a constant internet connection, so if you are playing locally away from wifi it wonβt work.
- To get a full game going you will need a program like β£ and/or β£
- Not very optimized for performance (Still in Early Access)
- Tile rotation is limited
- Internet connection required
- Fog of War is still experimental and VERY buggy. Minis that are out of line-of-site are automatically hidden, but it's a bit tedious (but possible) to hide rooms from players.
- Relatively limited in array of tiles/props, but clipping helps a lot with the lack of props (you can combine props into eachother to make new items)
- Very limited mini stat tracking
- Very limited animations
- No ability to limit certain player views (ie: darkvision, etc)
- Limited atmospheric controls |
